Wyndham Extra Credit

Designing and piloting a point-of-sale, hotel-based credit card acquisition program built to roll out across 9,000+ properties - from a 10-hotel pilot to 200+ franchise hotels enrolled.

With over 9,000 hotels across the US, the on-property experience represented the most direct access to both existing members and new customers - yet it was almost entirely untapped.

The airline industry had long used in-flight credit card pitches to great effect. The question was whether a highly fragmented, franchise-driven hotel network could do the same - and whether the economics would hold across brands ranging from Wyndham Grand to Days Inn.

Four phases from pilot to platform

Phase 1 · Pilot & Training
Inherited a 10-property pilot across Wyndham-managed hotels. Partnered with Visa and Barclays to adopt instant issuance technology - customers could apply during their stay and receive a temporary virtual card with a partial credit line, immediately usable for incidentals, plus 15,000 bonus points. Rebuilt the front-desk training program and conducted on-site visits nationwide, stripping the airline-model content down to what translates to a hotel check-in context.
Phase 2 · Incentive Redesign
Barclays' airline model paid $35 per approved application - infrequent enough that it took a back seat to other hotel promotions. Working with legal on both sides, secured a concession to run a $10 per application incentive for owned and managed hotels, and 2,500 points to associates for any application at franchise launch.
Phase 3 · Franchise Expansion
Expanding from 35 managed properties to the full franchise base required solving legal restrictions on cash payments to franchisee employees and earning independent-operator buy-in. Cash incentives converted to 2,500 Wyndham Rewards Points per application; the program launched as "Wyndham Extra Credit" at the Global Hotel Conference, where a dedicated booth offering 30,000 points for sign-ups drove enrollment. Result: 200+ franchise hotels enrolled alongside the 35 managed properties.
Phase 4 · Digital Channel
Franchise agreements didn't mandate WiFi providers, leaving a patchwork of systems across properties. WiFi was selected as the most viable digital channel: a purpose-built landing page supported card sign-ups, Wyndham Rewards enrollment, and newly launched DoorDash benefits, deployed through the largest WiFi partners with hotel consent.

Key decisions that shaped the program

Instant issuance

Virtual card with a partial credit line delivered at approval, usable immediately during the stay - removing the "wait weeks for the card" friction of traditional applications.

Franchise flexibility

A single program playbook couldn't work across a 90%+ franchised network. Incentive structure, collateral, and engagement methods were designed with franchisee autonomy in mind.

WiFi as acquisition channel

A custom landing page for each hotel tracked customer behavior and gave properties credit. Every hotel included Wyndham Rewards enrollment; DoorDash-eligible hotels added the delivery benefit. The pandemic cut the rollout short.

Volume-tiered incentives

Moving from a flat bounty to a tiered per-application model aligned agent behavior with program goals and encouraged consistent performance over one-off pitches.

Strong in upscale. A data point in economy.

Approval rates diverged sharply by brand tier - a finding that reshaped the program's economics and future strategy.

Upscale brands
~35%
While the average approval rate for upscale brands justified the program cost at the hotel, the volume of only 35 hotels wasn't sufficient to warrant the employee-facing program.

Midscale & economy brands
~5%
This segment makes up roughly 90% of Wyndham's 9,000+ US hotels. The 5% approval rate here led to a decision to sunset the employee program and double down on digital, and surfaced a need for second-look products for these customers.

The bigger opportunity revealed

While the economy approval rate made direct card acquisition uneconomical at scale, the WiFi channel proved viable and expandable. The data made the case for a strategic pivot: Wyndham taking a more active role in standardizing property WiFi infrastructure, creating a controlled acquisition channel for the credit card program while advancing other Wyndham digital priorities.

I led testing and product development on this WiFi channel through 2020, scaling the pilot to roughly 60 hotels into a cross-functional landing-page platform:

Wyndham Rewards

Loyalty enrollment built into every participating hotel's landing page.

Brand Marketing

Property-level brand messaging surfaced at the point of WiFi connection.

Co-Brand Card

Card offer toggled on or off per hotel based on pilot participation.

DoorDash Delivery

Delivery benefit dynamically managed by zip code coverage.

Work was underway on property-level messaging and marketing capabilities when the pandemic cut the pilot short. In 2025, Wyndham formalized this approach as Wyndham Gateway, a centralized guest WiFi portal unveiled at that year's Global Conference - taking the cross-functional model this pilot proved out and making it a standard offering across all 9,000+ Wyndham hotels.
